Celebrating History And Youth Excellence

The 1895 Project, Inc.

About The 1895 Project

The 1895 Project draws inspiration from the first documented African American Debutante Ball, held in New Orleans in 1895, a celebration of African American achievements in education, community engagement, and upward mobility. Building on this rich legacy, The 1895 Project aims to revive and modernize the Debutante Ball tradition, creating an inclusive space for BIPOC youth—both female and male—to be recognized for their accomplishments and potential.

Our mission is to celebrate the academic, personal, and extracurricular achievements of BIPOC youth as they transition from high school to adulthood. While we continue the tradition of honoring educational excellence, we also strive to highlight the diverse talents, interests, and aspirations of each participant. Through mentorship, empowerment, and community support, The 1895 Project prepares young people to thrive in all aspects of their future endeavors.

Our Mission

The 1895 Project aims to honor the legacy of debutante balls and cotillions in the southern African American tradition by empowering students of color and welcoming all youth. We provide programs in career development, life skills, and social growth to support students on their journey to adulthood, fostering resilience, confidence, and community commitment.

The 1895 Project is committed to fostering community engagement and support. We partner with local nonprofits, community organizations, and small businesses to deliver the core components of our Debutante training. Once selected, each Debutante will participate in a six-month series of skill-building activities and workshops. These bi-monthly sessions will focus on life and career mastery, helping each young person prepare for their future. Additionally, each participant will be paired with a mentor or coach to guide them as they prepare for our inaugural 1895 Ball in 2026.

We are just beginning our journey and are incredibly excited for what’s to come—but we can’t do it alone! We are actively seeking nonprofit and community partners, leaders, thinkers, sponsors, and resources to help bring this vision to life.

Together, we can make a lasting impact.
